ABSTRACT: Times have changed. Seasoned public information officers are challenged to keep up with new methods and modes of information sharing outlets that weren’t available even just a few years ago. New technology has created the need for new rules, laws and policy regulations to manage information. FACEBOOK, TWITTER, Blogging—where did this begin; and where does it end? Limiting yourself to the knowledge and skills of a bygone era in this new age of information can have catastrophic consequences. The modern PIO’s ability to get in front of information with timely, accurate reporting is a skill set requiring knowledge of the tools which now drive information technology; tools that have progressively developed over the last few years. This course is designed for seasoned PIOs with more than one year of experience in public information. Marketing the Middle introduces attendees to the important changes in legal issues and technology that now govern the 24-hour news cycle. Students will learn advanced, highly desirable skills to present information accurately using a variety of methods including print, audio and video media.
